Revenge of the Nerds; Omega Mu For Life!!!

This month's theme for Alternative Curves is Cult Movies. I was pushing my luck a bit this month because this is literally the last day I had to put something together for this theme. I really wanted to do a post this month because I'm obsessed with cult movies and I probably could have done a gazillion posts based off this theme if time had allowed. It's unfortunate I was so busy this month and I didn't have time to put something more epic together. I'm disappointed I had to throw this together last minute and take the photos with my cellphone. However, I was able to get something together, even if it's not what I had envisioned.

The cult movie I picked to feature for this theme is Revenge Of The Nerds. I have loved this movie since I was a kid. Yes, as a child in the 80's, I was allowed to watch this movie although I was only ten at the time, and in hindsight, this was a bad decision on my parents' part. That's just how it was back then. I totally remember renting that beta tape from the video store and being so super pumped because it was the hot new release of that week. Nerds ended up being hotter than my prepubescent-self had bargained for; it was my first exposure to panty raids, bush, hair pie, blunts ,and boners. WOOT WOOT!

For those who have not had the pleasure of viewing this classic movie I'll give you a brief rundown of the film. It's an early 80's comedy film about social life on a college campus. The film's story line chronicles a group of nerds trying to stop harassment from the persecuting jock fraternity, the Alpha Betas. The Alpha Betas burn down their frat house and seize the dorm the nerds occupy. The Nerds are then forced to find a rental place and it angers the Alpha Betas when their new home is better than the dorm they stole. Later, a rock painted with the phrase "NERDS GET OUT" is thrown through the Nerds' window, and the sound of a motorcycle speeding away can be heard. The Nerds appeal to the Greek Council, only to find that the president of the council is a member of the Alpha Betas. The Nerds take things into their own hands and fight to join the Tri-Lambs Fraternity, Lambda
Lambda, Lambda. In order to gain full-membership, the nerds prepare a party and invite the head of Tri-Lambs. The party appears ruined when their promised dates from Pi Delta Pi do not appear. Thanks to Omega Mu, a sorority consisting of fat and geeky women, and large amounts of pot, the party is saved. This is not the end of the trials and tribulations for the Nerds, but I'll leave you there and advise you to watch the film if you haven't.

The outfit I put together for this post is my tribute to the kicking, bad ace, nerdy, fat girl sorority Omega Mu. If I was ever going to be in a sorority I would want to be a MU! An Omega Mu is not so much into style or fashion, and would be disheveled from putting her focus on other important nerdy things. This is my attempt to channel my inner MU.  I picked up this Omega Mu t-shirt a couple years ago. To be honest, I'm not sure where I ordered it online at this point, and when I went to look for it I could not find this exact shirt. If you do a Google search you will find similar options out there. I paired my t-shirt with a black fold-over skirt and some knee-high socks I picked up at Torrid. The socks were purchased in the fall, so unfortunately they are currently out of stock. I really hope Torrid comes out with more long socks next fall because they were wonderful and fit my 18" calves up to my knees. The black fold over skirt is a size 3X and fits wonderfully at a size 26. I find this skirt has just enough stretch and it has become my go-to skirt to wear over all my patterned leggings. I own 3 of these skirts because I wear them so much. Finally, I finished off my look with some old-school saddle shoes from Modcloth. I didn't have any sort of 80's style runner in my shoe collection so these were going to have to do. While they don't scream 80's, I think they still work with the look.

I would like to give a special shout out to my son Dorian Gray who stood in for my husband as my Tri-Lamb nerd. My husband Graham is a lot like Gilbert the main character in many ways so I got him this shirt on eBay.  Graham was not available to take photos with me so my little man stepped in. Mommy's nerd in training.

Pin Up Girl Clothing; Voodoo Vixen Monster Dress

For optimal viewing gratification, please enjoy this video while perusing my post.

I first creeped the Voodoo Vixen Monster print dress on Pin Up Girl Clothing (PUG) I gasped because the print was so killer, the color was so vibrant, and the cut was so sexy! I instantly fell in love with this dress. The more I looked at the dress, the more I loved it, but unfortunately the more I looked at it, the more I doubted it would even fit. There was the little voice in the back of my head that kept saying PUG runs small. This was not first-hand information from trying on their clothing, but information acquired from years of being involved in Facebook clothing groups. The women in my groups always loved PUG, but I have seen countless people complain and say they are not true to size and run small. So when I saw this amazing bodycon beauty I had  my moment of lust and then a moment of mourning for the dress that I thought would never be.
Fast forward a couple months and I stumble upon a blog post by a fellow fat fashionista, Natalie of Extra Large As Life. She is wearing the dress, I repeat she is fat and wearing the dress!!! It looks fantastic on her and fits perfectly. The love was alive again and I resumed lusting after a green monstrous beauty! I totally creeped all the deets on Natalie's blog and messaged her with additional questions because if I was going to invest over $200 on a dress after shipping and duty I needed to make sure it would fit my size 26 body. I was pleasantly surprised to find out from Natalie that the dress did have some stretch and seemed to run a bit larger than the size chart on the PUG page indicated. I showed the dress to my husband and he thought it was super cute and sexy, so he picked it up for me as a treat. Gosh I love treats!!!
When the dress arrived it was even nicer in person, if that is even possible. The fabric is amazing quality and does provide some stretch. The length was perfect on my 5'6" frame and the adjustable cross over front straps helped enhance my bust and give the dress that extra punch. The Voodoo Vixen Monster dress was a little pricey, however it has to be one of the nicest dresses I have purchased in a long time. It is unique and a bit of a showstopper so I know every time I wear this dress I will look and feel amazing in it. It's totally worth every penny and I can't wait to get my second PUG dress. I actually entered a PUG contest last week with Natalie from Extra Large as Life and we WON! We both are getting a dress of our choice for free. I won't tell you which dress I picked, but look for it in a future blog post.

Domino Dollhouse Crop Top Goddess

For optimal viewing gratification, please enjoy this video while perusing my post.

We rule the world, all eyes on us, get it girls, calling all Goddesses!! ~ Adore Delano

This month's Ahead of the Curve theme is "Summer is Coming." A few years ago, summer would have meant madly scrambling in search of a dozen black shrugs so I could cover my fat arms all summer long. Boy how times have changed! A few summers ago I broke free from the shrugs, embraced my fat arms, and never looked back. Last summer I leveled up yet again when I embraced my first crop top. The first time I put a crop top on it was totally terrifying, but I said "screw it, I'm going to give this a try!" To my surprise, I actually looked really killer in a crop, and wearing it was super comfy and cool. When I started to brainstorm what I would wear for the "Summer is Coming" theme I was drawn back to my crop tops. They are totally going to be a staple for me this summer. In fact, I am going to chop up some of my favorite tees and have them hemmed by a tailor so I can wear them as crop tops as well. When I put a crop top on I feel like I'm breaking free, like I could rule the world, like I'm a goddess.

The perfect attire for a fearless, fat goddess can totally be found at Domino Dollhouse. A few months ago they released a fall/winter collection called Science/Visions and it is full of pieces fit for a goddess. Don't let the fall/winter part fool you, there are definitely  pieces in this collection that can be worn thoughout the spring and summer as well. The pieces I was drawn to the most were the Alchemy Crop Top and the Alchemy Maxi Skirt. Both items are made from 100% jersey material and feature a large geometric graphic down the front. The graphic is added with a screen-printing style called discharge printing. This is a really wicked technique because once the item has been washed the graphic is still soft and lush and won't get hard and crackly like some of the graphics I've seen printed on jersey material before. There is nothing more annoying then a cracked applique after one wash.

I picked up both of these pieces in a size 3X. I found the sizing on both of the items to be very generous. I like my crop tops to be loose, and a bit baggy, but I could have easily sized down to a 2X and had this shirt still work for my personal tastes. The maxi skirt will also work for someone with measurements a bit larger than the size chart. The max hip measurement on a 3X was 62 inches but my hips are 64 inches and I have a couple of inches to spare in the skirt still. Let's talk about the length of the maxi, this skirt is meant to be worn high-waisted. At 5'6" it really fits me like a dream and hits just at the top of my feet. If you are shorter than I am you will probably have to have the bottom hemmed, but that would totally be an easy alteration. I love that both of these pieces will work on different body shapes and heights and still be flattering. If you want a good quality, easy to wash and wear, but make a bit of a statement outfit, I think this is a the perfect choice. I know I'm going to get tons of use out of these pieces this summer.
